Lie of the Day
Rhetoric:
“We’ll halve the deficit in half over a five-year period of time if Congress holds the line on discretionary spending.” -President Bush’s remarks in Pasco, WA
Reality: Bush tries to deceive with budget. Bush’s own misleading budget plan (which he claims reduces the deficit) does not include the continued cost of Iraq or the $1 trillion it will cost to make his own tax cuts permanent, among other things. The result is that under the Bush plan, the deficit is predicted to be “in the range of $500 billion in 2009.”

Bush took office with a $127 billion surplus; turned it into a $445 billion deficit. “On July 30, the Office of Management and Budget released new projections stating that the budget deficit will grow to $445 billion in fiscal year 2004." [Source: Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 8/1/04]
