Punk Rockers for Political Justice
From Fatwreck.Com
What is punk rock if not a collection of tribes?
It's time to close ranks. Without the shared strength, we get squashed like chocolate left out in the sun. The target and aim of this Rock Against Bush II CD/DVD set? Nothing short of giving America a better chance of surviving. How? By exposing George Bush as a vicious man who is only concerned with the richest one percent of Americans. The entire world thinks that Americans are a bunch of fuckers. It'd be really nice if that attitude changed.
As naive as this might sound, the Rock Against Bush II comp is pitting guitars, documentaries, comedy, and amplification up against tanks, bombs, and multinational corporations. And it's gaining ground, charging up the once-dormant, apathy-riddled 18-24 year-old voters, an untapped resource.
Is it working? The value-priced first volume of this series was, by far, the fastest selling, highest exposure compilation in Fat's history. It's not a self-congratulating victory either, as many of the bands are from scads of other labels. Push petty scene politics aside for a second and think of the reward.
How can punks go right into thousands of homes and make folks want to listen? Easy. There's already an inroad. Rock Against Bush charted #54 on Billboard, scored the #1 slot on the indie chart, and held fast as the #2 internet record. It remained in the Top 200 for two months straight. With Rock Against Bush II, start with multi-platinum punks Green Day, rockers and Grammy winners the Foo Fighters, add to the mix long-revered and respected bands like Bad Religion, Rancid, Sleater-Kinney, Dropkick Murphys, Jawbreaker, and Operation Ivy. Top it off and round it out with 28 tracks including 20 rare and unreleased songs and you've got a damn fine collection of protest songs.
As with the first collection, there will be extensive liner notes, essays, contact addresses, that can feed your desire to understand why all of these bands and labels are so pissed and shooting for a better future. Further arming anger with information, the DVD accompanying Rock Against Bush II includes videos by NOFX, Flogging Molly, and the Alkaline Trio. It also contains six political shorts, ranging from Unconstitutional, a documentary on how Americans' civil liberties are being shorn at every possible turn, to Fixed in Florida, where journalist Greg Palast peels back layer upon layer of deceit and illustrates how the 2000 election was hijacked in the sunshine state. To round it all out, because if we can't laugh, weÕre truly fucked, is comedy from Will Ferrell, Patton Oswalt, and Greg Proops.
Who would have guessed that a punk rock CD is actually making the highest levels of politics a little nervous? That's the power of consolidation.
